Yamaha CS-80 Synth Demo | Iconic Riffs by Vangelis, ELO & More!
Yamaha CS-80 Synthesizer Masterclass: 35 Iconic Riffs from Legendary Artists! **NO FX**
Discover the incredible versatility of the Yamaha CS-80 as we recreate 35 famous riffs from legends like Vangelis, ELO, Michael Jackson, Toto, and Dr. Who. This video showcases the authentic sounds and setups that defined music of the 70s and 80s, demonstrating why the CS-80 is a revered classic.
The Yamaha CS-80, released in 1977, is beloved for its rich sound and expressive capabilities, featuring polyphonic aftertouch, a ribbon controller, and lush analog tones. Its history traces back to the Yamaha GX-1, often called the "Godfather of the CS-80," which introduced many of the innovations. Watch as we bring to life this legendary instrument, exactly as used by the most iconic artists!
The Yamaha CS-80 is renowned for its unmatched expressive capabilities. With features like polyphonic aftertouch, a ribbon controller, and dual layers of analog oscillators, this synthesizer allows musicians to craft highly dynamic and emotive performances. These qualities, combined with its rich, warm sound, have cemented the CS-80 as a staple in the music industry, particularly in the genres of film scoring, rock, and electronic music.
But the legacy of the CS-80 doesn't begin there. Its precursor, the Yamaha GX-1, was a monumental step in the development of synthesizers. Released in 1973, the GX-1 was a massive, multi-keyboard polyphonic synthesizer that introduced many of the modulation and control features perfected in the CS-80. Although the GX-1 was a rarity and an expensive instrument, it laid the groundwork for the more accessible and widely used CS-80.
In this video, you’ll experience the authentic recreations of famous riffs as we dial in the exact settings used by artists in their studio and live hits. Sit back and enjoy the nostalgic journey through the sounds that shaped an era!
The audio is DIRECT, 100% DRY, & IN STEREO - You are hearing the raw audio as it comes directly from the synthesizer. NO post processing (Effects, EQ, or Dynamics) whatsoever.

    at 21 minutes you claim that the oscillator 2 has a "noisegenerator" but what your actually doing is modulating oscillator 2 with the pre-configured mod source (noise) and then blending that signal with pure noise in the filter.

    An interesting Clavinet riff appears on _"Soft and Wet,"_ the first single from legendary artist *Prince* on his 1978 debut album. During the intro, a Clavinet is heard complimenting the thematic lead synth. When the verse begins, a funky Clavinet riff is heard behind the vocal, but mixed far enough in the background that its exact rhythm can be tricky to discern. According to *Matt "Doctor" Fink,* every keyboardist that auditioned for Prince, failed to play that part accurately. On Fink's first attempt, Prince said, "Well, that's _kind of_ close." Fink replied, "Can you just show me the part? It's mixed so far back in the mix, I can't quite pick it up." Prince demonstrated the funky Clavinet part played during the 1st and 2nd verses of _Soft and Wet_ for several minutes, and ultimately Fink was able to copy the riff after seeing Prince play it. It was one of the reasons Dr. Fink got and held the job as Prince's lead keyboardist for more than a decade.

    Hmm, I’m sorry to say but this just sounds like the sounds were not programmed to match on both units. Obviously, a 50 year old pile of electronics will change over time. I’m not sure if old age changes the sound. I do wonder if we compared a new 1970 to a reissue if those would sound closer.

    • @AndyWhitmore
      @AndyWhitmore 6 днів тому

      hi - thanks for watching - I did my best to duplicate the sounds - & yes - the settings were not matched as the tolerances are different - nevertheless - the synths sound very different - so its a challenge - probably cos one them is new & the other 50 years old!

    Wondelful presentation! Is your D50 keybed broken or why do you use another keyboard to control it? The D50 blew me away when I tried in 1988. I especially liked the "Choral" sound using the Chase effect. I still remember sound nr.65 was a nice brass sound that sounded very dynamic as aftertouch could be used to change it from mellow to bright. But I ended up buying the D10 since it was multi-timbral. ----------------------------------- But why does the D50 sound better? Some say he A/D converters play a part, but I read the synth engine has two LFOs. The D10 could only use the LFO to modulate the vibrato. What does the extra LFO do on the D50? Sometimes the LFO can modulate the filter to open and close continuously, creating that ethereal sweeping sound. But unless using aftertouch, I don't hear that sound on the D50. They both use four elements/partials to make a sound. And the samples are mostly the same. So what makes the D50 sound better? ----------------------------------- Funnily enough, the string sound with the mix of a sampled attack and synth sustain made it hard to hear the attack sample and sometimes it sounded better with the synth element muted. This can be heard at the end of "Out of blue come green" by a-ha is in this clip.ua-cam.com/users/clipUgkxBbZC-_mxpnMRFf8GsS_zLu_NXmpB-5vL?si=e2VIRK4GxmUSlBy_ Maybe they muted the sustain but I believe there was another version with just the attack on a sound card for the D50. ----------------------------------- It's ironic that back then the sampled snipets were the big thing but now the synth engine seems much more interesting as it can be tweaked in much greater detail. I always thought samplers are like cameras with their realism while synths are like having a full palette at your disposal. ----------------------------------- My favorite group a-ha used the D50 extensively on the song and album "Stay on these roads". Also, Jean Michel Jarre used it on "Revolutions". He used the presets as they were and I have learned that was the case with some sounds from "Zoolook" with the Fairlight. I had always thought that he tweaked and made his own sounds and felt disappointed to learn that wasn't always the case. ----------------------------------- Sad that the era of legendary synths and gear in general is over as people do everything on their computers nowadays.

    • @AndyWhitmore
      @AndyWhitmore 19 днів тому

      Hi @chrismossy9774 Thanks for your reply I used a mother keyboard as it shows off the D-50 with much more expression - the D50 keyboard works fine D10 vs D50 - I think whilst they can potentially sound the same - because they are set up differently - you have to program differently to get the same sound. Also - I believe that some of the loops (digital native dance) are different too Lastly - I think the D50 has fx on that need to be disabled to get closer to the D10 Lastly - D10 is 32 note polyphonic - D50 is 16 note polyphonic Synth sample eliminated - yes - then it becomes more like a digital synth pre samples like a DX7 The sample snippets were revolutionary & now have been so superceded - they are now the charm of the D50 - likewise - the synth engine is an early version of digital analog synthesis “I always thought samplers are like cameras with their realism while synths are like having a full palette at your disposal.” Completely agree - a digital synth is a photo of an analog synth - for 1 second at one time. Analog synths change constantly - as the analog oscillators warm up & cool down - & work against each other. Synths like the Jupiter 4 & CS80 have individual voices that all sound different - & lastly - each CS80 sounds different to the next one. How can you copy that with a one time snap shot for your digital copy? The D50 is hard to program - but I did master it. Re the Era being over - that’s why I have this channel Thanks for feedback!

    I saw the dry video first and this is just night and day. I actually remember playing the CS-80 in the 70's at music shops and trade shows. I was never impressed and thought that it sounded just Ok. But with a bit of reverb and eq, it really comes alive. I still think that a Montage or Kronos could copy these sounds pretty easily, but I see why the CS-80 was considered a classic. Incidentally, Blade Runner had a LOT of reverb. I think you could have added a bit more and it would have been closer to the original.

      Funny you should say that but you are right. I remember back in the late 70s Stevie Wonder used a synth that was "unavailable" to us mere mortals - which I later found out to be the legendary Yamaha GX1! Well spotted - & yes - Wonder used the CS80 for about 8 years after purchasing it shortly after completing "Songs in the Key of Life"

    Also used by Tony Lugton from the great band Pseudo Echo (the name came from page 56 of the Odyssey manual).

      Appreciate that - I'm looking for inspiration for my iconic Arp Odyssey Sounds video!
